Research Portfolio

Primary research examples
Questionnaire and answers of advert
This is a good example of primary research as I have made and designed a questionnaire which will ask people for the information which I am in need of. The premise of the questionnaire is about the advert which we had made, we were trying to find out what people liked about it and if there were any thing to be improved. We used primary research as it gave us a response from someone who has watched it, we wouldn't be able to use secondary research for this as there is not information in books or online which means we would have to go out and find the reviews our self.

Questionnaire and answers of Esting
This questionnaire was also about one of our projects. We used a questionnaire to see how people enjoyed our video we made, this is a good example of primary research as we are the people going out and asking people what their opinion is on the video we made. The results can not be replicated by another questionnaire and is completely based on what they have watched. For example one of the questions asks if they think there is any thing which would be improved in the video. There were some answers which said lighting and making it more flowing, these type of results can only be found by answering this questionnaire.

Video example of interview
For this assignment, we chose not to only do a questionnaire but to go out and to ask people if we could film their response to some questions. In the video below you are see the first hand response of what people think of the internet. This style of primary research allowed you to see then hand gestures, facially expressions and the tone of the voice, these aspects can not be experienced when doing a questionnaire. As shown by a clip in the video the interviewee was really happy that the internet was about but at the same time really scared of it; If you listen carefully you can hear that the tone of his voice changes due to the severity of what the internet is truly capable of.

Pre-Production paper work
Pre-production paperwork is very important and is something which is hard to find online as a lot of it relates to people you are working with. There are some thing online which can help you, such as location recces of the area which you are filming in can be found online. The personal information about the actors, shot list and timings are all part of the primary research which needs to be done before filming. The performer release form is a key form to fill out so that the actor has a grant to preform on the set/ film. This is primary research as you will have to go to some one and ask them questions about themselves.

Secondary research examples
Unilever pitch prezi
The Unilever pitch is a good example of a secondary research example because most of it was sourced either by internet or by books/ magazines. I had researched history, what the company actually is and some of the companies which Unilever helps such as making them more aware of the impact they are having on the environment. With finding information out online it means that I am not the first person to think about what they do, this then makes it secondary information. There is no way I would be able to go out and ask people in a primary research manner to find most of the information about Unilever, this is the sort of information which needs to come from the source which is Unilever itself. The reason why I wouldn't be able to get hold of this kind of information is because of the location where I am constructing my research and also the directors wont be able to come out of work just to answer some questions.

TV advert analysis prezi
The TV advert was also very heavily influenced by secondary information because I need to look at reviews from people and to see figures of sales. I was unable to find find out how many people have actually purchased the phone due to the limitations of information which I can get my hands on. Some of the other information which I couldn't get in primary research is is the target audience, I needed to find out what certain people like about the phone and some people don't like about it. I used the internet to find people view on it to see if it was for them. The reasons why I couldn't use primary research are because of the large numbers which I needed to see how many people bought the phone and also the main areas where the phone was bought.

E Sting and the brief post
On this task I had to look at E4 and what an E Sting is. For the E4 research I had to find out about the history and what sort of company it is, this lead me to find out more about the other sister companies such as Channel 4 and Film 4. I also had to find out what an E Sting is and what is it used for. I used the internet to go on websites such as Channel 4 and E4 to see what they are and how they use them, the research which I have found out was secondary as it was telling about the competition and what I need to do to apply for the the chance to have my clip shown on TV. I wasn't able to gather this information from primary research so I used my resources to find it online. The reason why I was unable to use primary research is because the information which I needed was online and wasn't common knowledge for people to know, also the location where I carried out my research was a large distance away from the E4/ Channel 4 head quarters.

3MW extra research
This task asked me to find out how to deconstruct a news broadcast and to find out how they will present certain news in different times. For example the most impacting and devastation news will be shown at the start; the nicer news will be shown at the end so then it makes people leave on a positive note. As I had to watch a video I had to listen to secondary news which was being read out. This is secondary as the news reader was reading primary information which they have found out from the location of the news. Other secondary information which I found out was about the news reader, I found out who they are and what age they are. The reason why this is secondary research is because I had to watch a video of the news, when watching the news as the viewer all information given to you is secondary, I was not the one who went out and found the news they were reading out which means it is second to me. This is why I was unable to do this task in primary research because I needed to see how the news was presented and what why the laid the information out.
